SAYAT-NOVA AVENUE
One of the main avenues of the Yerevan city center.
Sayat-Nova
Avenue was officially opened in 1963. The avenue is named after the 18th
century poet, musician, and bard Harutyun Sayadyan, better known as Sayat-Nova.
Sayat-Nova
Avenue stretches for 1.5 km. It begins in Komitas Park. It is also home to the
Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, in front of which is a statue of Komitas (1988, sculptor Ara Harutyunyan).
The air in this area is full of music.
At
the corner of Sayat-Nova Avenue and Teryan Street is the statue "Karabakh Woman" by sculptor David
Yerevantsi, which the author created in the image of Arev Baghdasaryan, a
native of Shushi, a solo dancer and singer.
Passing
this intersection, you can see the Yerevan State Puppet Theater named afterHovh. Tumanyan (1935). The
theater building stands out from the general environment, and everyone from
young to old likes to ring the bell at the entrance. Inside the building is a
musical fairy tale house, where heroes of popular fairy tales are presented.
A
little further down, at the intersection with Abovyan Street, is the
13th-century Church of the Holy Virgin (Katoghike), which was previously part of a monastery complex. In 2008,
with the demolition of the Language Institute building, the small church was
freed from its stone walls and took on a new life. A new religious complex is
being built north of the church, which includes the Church of St. Anna.
At
the next intersection is the 14-story building of the Ani Plaza Hotel (1970).
A
number of cafes and restaurants are located on Sayat-Nova Avenue. There are
also clothing and electronics stores on that part of the avenue.
If we continue the path, Sayat-Nova Avenue will intersect with the Circular Park. Here, in a small, narrow and green area, you will see the monument to Yeghishe Charents.
The
avenue ends in the southeast at the intersection of Yeghishe Charents Street.
This is the Republic of Argentina Square. In 2019, a bust of Argentine politician, General Manuel Belgrano, was installed on the square to
emphasize the centuries-old friendship between the Armenian and Argentine
peoples.
