HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
BUILDING OF THE NAS RA INSTITUTE OF ARCHAEOLOGY AND ETHNOGRAPHY
1950s
The building is located at 15 Charents Street, adjacent to Yerevan State University.
Initially, the Institute of Fine Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR was located here, and in 1973 the building was allocated to the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR.
It is a three-story structure with a rectangular plan, with a system of rooms grouped around corridors stretching along the longitudinal axis on all floors and perpendicular corridors at their ends. All facades have symmetrical architectural solutions. The main facade stands out with expressive forms, with a two-story high entrance hall formed by a colonnade in the center, recessed from the general plane, with an entrance opening. Above the entrance, on the third floor, is an open balcony stretching along the conference hall.
The
constructive and decorative elements of the main façade’s design include
rhythmically arranged windows, divided cornices of the second and third floors,
and the arcade emphasizing the rhythm of the edge windows (three each) of the
third floor. The eastern facade facing the courtyard also has a recessed solution
with a service door opening in the center. The building material is pink
polished tuff.
The slight renovation works have not distorted the structural and external solutions of the building.
The building, with
its spatial composition and height, is in harmony with the street's
development. The composition is anchored in the traditions of national culture,
executed using the architectural forms of the Tamanyan school. It is one of the
buildings representing Yerevan of the 1950s.
