HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
OBSERVATORY
1926
It is located between Abovyan
and Teryan streets, in the park named after Viktor Hambardzumyan. It bears the
name of the world-renowned Armenian astrophysicist Viktor Hambardzumyan. The
building was designed in 1921. According to Yerevan’s first master plan (1924),
it is the compositional center of the Student District envisioned by architect
Alexander Tamanyan. It served as the educational base of the Department of
Astrophysics of Yerevan State University, where the Yerevan observation station
of artificial satellites of the USSR (founded in 1957) was also located.
The composition consists of
interconnected rectangular two-story and cylindrical volumes with a movable
dome. It is a stone structure. Smooth-cut tuff from Artik and roughly hewn
basalt were used as building materials. It is one of the notable works of Alexander
Tamanyan in Armenia, built in the traditions of classical architecture.
