OBSERVATORY BUILDING
1926
Аrchitect: Alexander
Tamanyan
It is located between Abovyan and Teryan streets, in
the central part of the Student Park (now Victor Hambardzumyan Park), at 43
Abovyan Street. It bears the name of the world-renowned Armenian astrophysicist
Victor Hambardzumyan.
The project was developed in 1921. According to the
first general plan of Yerevan (1924), developed by architect Alexander
Tamanyan, it is the compositional center of the Student Quarter - the
educational base of the Astrophysics Department of Yerevan State University,
where the Yerevan observation station for artificial satellites of the USSR was
located (founded in 1957). Daily results were published in Soviet and foreign
scientific journals.
The composition consists of rectangular, two-story and
cylindrical volumes with a movable dome, connected to each other.
The building is made of stone. Polished Artik tuff and
roughly processed basalt were used as building materials.
This is one of Alexander Tamanyan’s notable works in
Armenia, built in the traditions of classical architecture.
