1940s
State Index:
1.5.6.1
The City Pantheon of Yerevan consists of several sections separated by passages. It is located in the Central Cemetery of the Erebuni administrative district. Here are buried state, military, and public figures who have rendered special services to the state and the people, as well as prominent figures in science, culture, and sports who have made significant contributions to their fields. In 2016, the expedition of the “Scientific Research Centre of Historical and Cultural Heritage” SNCO registered 614 graves in City Pantheon-1, 78 graves in City Pantheon-2, and 99 graves in City Pantheon-3. In subsequent years, these numbers have changed somewhat.
City Pantheon-1 is
the largest in size and occupies the central part of the Central Cemetery,
about 500 m northeast of the main entrance. It was formed in the 1940s.
In the mid-1930s, one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in Yerevan, Kozern, was closed, and from 1936 to 1957, the pantheon in Komitas Park was also closed. A new cemetery was founded in the southeastern part of the city, and the middle part of its territory was transformed into City Pantheon-1. In the 1940s-1950s, Panos Terlemezyan (painter, one of the organizers of the heroic defense of Van in 1915), People’s Artists of the Armenian SSR Arus Voskanyan and Hasmik, Academicians of the Armenian SSR Academy of Sciences Manuk Abeghyan and Hrachya Acharyan, composer Armen Tigranyan, writer Derenik Demirchyan, and others were buried here. Later, famous architects Mark Grigoryan, Rafael Israelyan, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia Yakov Zarobyan, composer Arno Babajanian, sculptor Yervand Kochar, painter Minas Avetisyan, physicist Artem Alikhanian, and others were buried here.
Over time, spouses and family members were also buried next to famous people.
City Pantheon-1
includes a huge number of valuable monuments, tombstones, busts, excellent
examples of modern khachkar art, small architectural forms with interesting
compositions and volumetric solutions.
City Pantheon-1 is closed, new burials are not carried out.
