The building is located in the Ring Park at 50 Khanjyan Street, on the bank of the Getar River.
It serves as one of the capital's most important sports
centers. In 1970, the ninth World Chess Champion Tigran Petrosyan laid the
first stone of the building's foundation. Architect Zhanna Meshcheryakova
designed the project.
The building has borne the famous chess player's name
since 1984.
The Chess Federation of Armenia operates in this
building.
The building's volumetric-spatial composition is simple
yet expressive. The structure has an unusual triangular shape, reminiscent of a
chess rook. Cleanly hewn tuff from Ani clads the facades.
Chess serves as the main theme of the artistic design.
Seven copper chess pieces adorn the facades. A colorful chess mosaic decorates
the walls of the second-floor hall.
Inside, visitors can find a bust of Tigran Petrosyan
(sculptor Ara Sargsyan, 1965, installed in 2014). A bust of Petrosyan (1989,
sculptor Ara Shiraz, architect Karlen Ananyan) stands near the building, along
with ceramic examples of chess pieces (created by ceramicist Hmayak Bdeyan).
The Central Chess House stands as one of the masterpieces
of Soviet modernist architecture and represents the most famous work of
architect Zhanna Meshcheryakova (1929-2014).
