MONUMENT “TORK ANGEGH” (Clumsy giant with a rough physique)
1982
State index: 1.8.15
Sculptor: Karlen Nuridjanyan
Engraver: Nerses Charkhchyan
Located on a hill in the second district of Nor Nork.
According to the father of Armenian history Movses Khorenatsi (5th
century), Tork was the great-grandson of patriarch Hayk - tall, with a rough
appearance, a giant possessing enormous strength, who was nicknamed Angegh
(Ugly) due to his ugliness. According to legend, he split rocks with his hands,
carved and smoothed them with his nails, engraving eagles on them, and on the
shore of Pontus (Black Sea), he tore off hill-sized rocks and threw them at
enemy ships, smashing them or putting them to flight.
Tork is depicted with a rock fragment raised above his head in both hands,
as if preparing to throw it at enemy ships. The statue expresses strength and
masculinity, having the characteristic appearance and posture of a hero.
The sculpture is made of forged copper, with a height of 4.8 m.
The monument was commissioned by the executive committee of the Soviet
district of Yerevan. There were plans to build an artificial lake in a nearby
ravine to symbolize the Pontic Sea, but this project was not implemented, and
the grand opening ceremony of the monument never took place.
