1976
Sculptor: Grigor Aharonyan
Architect: Mark Grigoryan
State index: 1.6.139
The statue is located between Movses Khorenatsi and Grigor Lusavorich streets, in the English Park, in front of the National Academic Theater named after Gabriel Sundukyan. It is oriented towards the fountains and designed for arc-shaped viewing. It was built on the occasion of the 150th birthday of the prominent Armenian dramatist G. Sundukyan and is dedicated to the main character of his play “Pepo”. The authors of the statue are Grigor Aharonyan, the National Artist of the USSR and Mark Grigoryan, the Honored Architect of the USSR.
It
is sculpted from 2 basalt pieces, the surface is treated with a granular
principle. The statue of Pepo has a full-height. The latter is depicted
realistically, as a collective folk character.
Pepo is dressed in Tiflis kinto, holding a bill in his right hand and a cap in his left. Pepo’s face is a clearly expressed national type, the facial features remind of Hrachya Nersisyan, who brilliantly created the character of Pepo in Hamo Beknazaryan’s namesake film (1935). The simplicity and certainty of the forms, their generalization, completeness of the image are specific to the sculpture.
Pepo’s
sculpture is a public assessment of the popularity of Sundukyan’s work.
