1957
State index: 1.6.95.3
Architect: Grigor Aghababyan, sculptor: Ara Sargsyan
The monument to Hovhannes Tumanyan (1869-1923), the poet
of all Armenians, prose writer, and public-national figure, stands in Freedom Square,
to the left of the main entrance of the Alexander Spendiaryan National Academic
Theatre of Opera and Ballet. The grand unveiling took place on November 17,
1957.
The monument's compositional style and overall dimensions
match those of Alexander Spendiaryan's monument, which was installed
simultaneously.
A stepped, rectangular pedestal supports the statue.
Tumanyan is depicted in a seated position, with a coat over his shoulders and a
book on his knees.
The execution is realistic, characteristic of the classical style.
The statue is made of bronze, while the pedestal is made
of pink marble from Bjni. The total height, including the pedestal, is 8.55 m.
The overall dimensions are 855 x 440 x 580 cm.
In 2008, due to the reconstruction work in Freedom Square
(construction of an underground parking lot), authorities temporarily removed
the monument from its location. They reinstalled it in May 2010. The Italian
company “Renco”
carried out the restoration work on the statue.
