MARTIROS SARYAN PARK
1980s
Improvement: architect Gagik Harutyunyan
The Martiros Saryan Park is located in the Kentron administrative district, between Mashtots Avenue, Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, and Stepan Zoryan Street, in front of the France Square and the Opera and Ballet Theater.
In the center of the park is
the 6-meter-high statue of the world-famous Armenian painter, the founder of
the national school of modern Armenian painting, Martiros Saryan (1986, white
marble, sculptor: Levon Tokhmajyan, architect: Arthur Tarkhanian).
The park also houses the “Erebuni-Yerevan”
(“Tree of Life”) monument dedicated to the 2750th anniversary of the founding
of Yerevan (sculptor: Hakob Philipossyan, architect: Feniks Darbinyan, painter:
A. Tsilkhiasyan, 1970) and the “Men” sculptural group (sculptor: David
Minasyan, 2007). The latter is dedicated to the 75th birthday of the Soviet
Armenian film director Edmond Keosayan and the 35th anniversary of the creation
of his film “Men”. The sculptural group was installed on the initiative of
Keosayan’s sons, Tigran and David Keosayan. It is made of bronze, the height is
1.97 meters.
On weekends, a permanent
open-air exhibition-sale of works by contemporary artists is held in the park,
which is why the people call it the “Saryan Vernissage”.
The park has comfortable
benches, developed walking paths, and cafes operating along the perimeter.
