MONUMENT TO HOVHANNES SHIRAZ

The
monument of the great Armenian poet Hovhannes Shiraz (Onik Karapetyan) is
located in the Malatia-Sebastia district, in the “Youth” park in vicinity with Holy
Trinity Church. The opening ceremony took place in 2005. The authors are
architect Ashot Smbatyan and poet’s eldest son, sculptor Ara Shiraz. H. Shiraz’s
bronze statue is installed on basalt multi-stepped pedestal. The poet is
depicted sitting down with a majestic position resting on the rock, with the
opened book in his right hand. The rock ends on top with the sculpture of Mount
Ararat.
On
the left sloping platform of the monument is inscribed:
My life was
still captive to the writing
Still captive
to your songs,
My nation, my
heart was still captive
In my song,
to your wounds ...
The
name of the sculptor is engraved on the western side of the monument: ARA
SHIRAZ
The
height of the monument is 3.2 m, the height of the rock is 4.7 m. It
eternalizes the memory of the great poet.
