1977
State Index: 1.8.13
Sculptor: Suren Nazaryan
Architect: Sargis Gurzadyan
The monument to the outstanding Soviet-Armenian military commander, the legendary commander of the 24th “Iron Division”, hero of the Russian Civil War and commander of the Armenian 6th Volunteer Regiment, Gai Bzhishkyants, is located in the Nor Nork administrative district's first massif, on the right side of Gai Avenue opposite Fridtjof Nansen Park. Its front side faces Gai Avenue. The grand opening took place on February 18, 1977. On a pedestal, a monumental bronze statue of a horseman sits on a vast basalt-paved area. Gai sits on a horse, his cloak flying in the wind and his sword raised, his head thrown back, filling the whole statue with dynamism.
Next to the
equestrian statue there is a long basalt memorial wall, covered with
bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the Civil War and an eagle. On it is written
in both Armenian and Russian: “TO LEGENDARY HERO, TALENTED GENERAL GAYU BZHISHKYANTS – GAYU”. Bronze, basalt, and granite were used as
construction materials. Together with the pedestal, the height of the monument
is 12.5 m. The monument to Gayu is one of the largest urban sculptures in
Armenian history. It is characterized by high professionalism and scale, and is
a tribute to a great compatriot.
