THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER
1970
State index: 1.12.10.1
Architect: Rafael Israelyan
It is located at 2 Azatutyun Avenue, in the area of the Hagհtanak Park Memorial Complex. The ashes of the unknown soldier were brought from the city of Mozdok, the city liberated by the 89th Armenian Tamanian Division during the Great Patriotic War, and reburied in front of the “Mother Armenia” monument in 1970. An eternal flame and a tombstone were installed according to the project of architect Rafael Israelyan.
In 1985, as part of the program of events dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory, the memorial complex of the Victory Park, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with a five-pointed star of eternal fire, was reconstructed and renewed (architects: Ashot Aleksanyan, Anahit Navasardyan). The grand opening took place on May 9, during the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory.
The
grave is a wide, rectangular platform (25.6 x 39.2 m) covered with large basalt
slabs, in the center of which is a massive tombstone (4.3 x 9.05 x 0.4 m) made
of Lalvar reddish quartzite-sandstone. On the latter in bronze letters, both in
Armenian and Russian is engraved “YOUR NAME IS UNKNOWN, YOUR FEAT IS IMMORTAL․”
It is surrounded by a smooth gray granite four-stepped parapet (12.5 x 23.4 m),
which in its turn is bordered by a black granite mourning belt. It borders the
Alley of Heroes on one side, and the staircase leading to the Victory Monument
on the other.
