CHURCH OF ST ASTVATSATSIN (PARISH CHURCH OF AVAN, ST. STEPHANOS)
XIX century
State index: 1.2.12
The church is located in A.
Shahinyan Street (formerly Avan XIV St.), in the IV lane, in a residential
construction. It was built in the XIX century, on the site of an older church,
which was called St. Stepanos, according
to the inscription made in 1436 on the pedestal of the monument under the
northern wall of the church. The latter was probably destroyed in 1679 from the
great earthquake of the Ararat valley. The newly built St. Astvatsatsin Church
had an earth-covered roof, which was covered with tin in 1882 with the funds of
the village society.
It is a three-nave hall
with two pairs of columns, high stage and with a pair of vaulted sacristies. The structure
features a tiled floor, with arched entrances situated on the south and west
sides. Constructed from tuff and basalt, the building is fortified on its
southern and eastern aspects. XVI
century carved cross stones are placed under the south wall (Sarin:XVI century, Mahtes Gohar: 1598,
Khanpar and Zakar: 1600). On the north side a cross stone is erected built by
the medieval stonemason Melikset in 16th century.
The area was improved in 1968.
