Tigran Petrosyan

Tigran Petrosian (nickname was "Iron Tigran") learned to play chess at the age of 8. His first major victory was during USSR Youth Championship in St. Petersburg (1945). From 1963 to 1969 he was the World Champion. He won four times the title of champion of the USSR, eight times European champion, and nine times the World Olympiads. In 1981 he played his last famous victory, against the chess player of Armenian origin Garry Kasparov.

The statue of Tigran Petrosian is located in the Davtashen administrative district of Yerevan, at the beginning of Tigran Petrosian Street. It was erected in 2006.
