1959
State index: 1.5.16
Architect: Mikael Mazmanyan
Sculptor: Yervand Kochar
Dimensions: 6.5 × 9.3 × 2.2 m
The
statue is located in the center of David of Sasun Square, on Tigran Mets
Avenue. It embodies the freedom-loving spirit of the Armenian people and the
unwavering struggle for independence.
David
of Sasun is one of the most beloved heroes of the Armenian epic "Sasna
Tsrer" - a strong and just figure who has become a symbol of national
identity.
The first full-size (plaster) version of the statue was exhibited in 1939 during the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the epic. In 1959, a copper statue of David of Sasun was erected, for which the authors in 1967 were awarded the USSR State Prize.
The
statue is placed in the middle of the pool, on a high rock-pedestal. Yervand
Kochar immortalized the moment when David, riding his horse, Kurkik Jalali, is
preparing to strike the enemy with his sword ”Tur Ketsaki”. Water flows from an overturned bowl under the horse's
hooves into the pool, symbolizing the filled cup of the people's patience.
Yervand Kochar created the face of the statue from the image of David of Sasun,
embodied by the Armenian SSR People's Artist Vanush Khanamiryan.
The
statue of David of Sasun is one of the symbols of the capital and one of the
favorite statues of Yerevan residents. It is among the best equestrian statues
of the Soviet period.
