STATUE OF SASUNTSI DAVID ( DAVID OF SASUN)

1959

State index: 1.5.16

Sculptor: Yervand Kochar

Architect: Mikael Mazmanyan

The statue stands in the center of the square carrying his name, directed at Tigran Mets Avenue. Sasuntsi David is one of the heroic and freedom-loving figures of the Armenian epic novel “Sasna Tsrer” gifted with rich human features and merits. The statue embodies the struggle of the Armenian people for independence, justice, and unwavering national rage.

The first real size (plaster) version of the statue was exhibited in 1939 during the epic’s 1000th anniversary celebration. In 1959 the copper-made statue of David of Sasun was introduced, for which the authors were awarded the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) state prize in 1967. The statue is perched on a rocky pedestal standing in the middle of the pool. The statue eternalizes the moment when David riding his horse “Kurkik Jalali”, is willing to hit the enemy with his sword “Tur Ketsaki”.

From the overturned bowl under the hooves of David’s horse, flows water into the basin symbolizing an overflown cup of endless patience of the Armenian people. Sculptor Yervand Kochar while creating the statue’s face was inspired by the Armenia Soviet Socialist Republic’s (ASSR) national artist Vanush Khanamiryan who had embodied a character of Sasuntsi David. The statue of David is one of the symbols of the capital and one of the beloved statues of Yerevanian people. It ranks among the best horse statues of Soviet-made art.

Size: 6.5×9m./3×2.2m.
