SQUARES AND PARKS
SQUARE OF FRIENDSHIP (BAREKAMUTYUN SQUARE)
1982
The square is located in the Arabkir administrative district at the intersection of Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, Kievyan Street, Hakobyan Street, Vazgen A Street (formerly Kasyan Street), and Hr. Kochar Street. Originally circular in design, it was renamed "Friendship" in 1982 to mark the 60th anniversary of the formation of the USSR.
The square features the “Barekamutyun” metro station and an underground
passage. The metro station, which opened on March 7, 1981, was designed by
architect Fenix Darbinyan with chief designer Gerasim Gevorgyan. The station’s
columned hall is three-aisled, measuring 100 meters in length and between 14 to
19 meters in width. At the end of the station’s hall is the sculpture “People’s
Friendship,” created by sculptor Ghukas Chubaryan.
The underground passage facilitates pedestrian traffic at the junction of several busy city streets: Marshal Baghramyan Avenue, Kievyan, Hakobyan, Vazgen A, and Hr. Kochar streets. Spanning the entire circular underground area of “Barekamutyun” Square, the passage has a diameter of 64 meters and a height of 4 meters. Built in 1982, the passage was designed by Fenix Darbinyan and constructed by A. Shakaryan. Its structural system features reinforced concrete beams, columns, and gables, and is constructed from various Armenian stone types, including tuff, granite, basalt, marble, and travertine. In 1983, it received a state award from the Armenian SSR.
In the years following independence, some interior modifications were
made, and shops now occupy the area. Additionally, in 2007, the
Baghramyan-Vazgen A-Komitas flyover and the Kievan-Kochar overpass were
constructed in the square.
