1957

State index: 1.6.95.5

Architects: Grigor Aghababyan, Phoenix Darbinyan

Sculptors: Ara Sargsyan, Ghukas Chubaryan

The monument to the distinguished Armenian composer and People's Artist of the Armenian SSR, Alexander Spendiaryan (1871-1928), is situated to the right of the main entrance to the National Academic Opera and Ballet Theater named after him on Freedom Square. The monument was unveiled on November 17, 1957.

The style and dimensions of this bronze statue are consistent with those of the monument to Hovhannes Tumanyan, which was installed at the same time. The statue, set on a stepped pedestal of pink granite, depicts Spendiaryan seated in an armchair, reading a musical score. The total height of the monument is 8.50 meters.

In 2008, during the reconstruction of Freedom Square for the construction of an underground parking lot, the monument was temporarily removed. It was reinstalled in May 2010, with restoration work carried out by the Italian company “RENCO.”
