Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God (Blessing of Grapes)
The Feast of the Assumption of the Holy Mother of God, also known as the Feast of the Blessing of the Grapes, is the fourth and oldest of the five Tabernacle feasts of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church. It takes place on the nearest Sunday to August 15.
After the Liturgy is celebrated in all churches, grapes are blessed. Following the liturgy, only the blessed grapes are allowed to be eaten, symbolizing the blessing of the harvest and the abundance of good things for the year ahead.
The blessed grapes are also used to make blessed wine, which people keep until the next year's grape blessing ceremony as a symbolic representation of abundance and prosperity. The tradition of using the same blessed grapes for the wine is maintained to carry the blessings forward to the next harvest.
