Yervand Kochar Museum is an important center for the study and promotion of the historical avant-garde in the region.
Yervand
Kochar Museum was established in 1984 on the site of the maestro's studio. It
is a unique centre in the region dedicated to the study and promotion of
historical avant-garde art. Kochar was an active participant in the creation of
historical avant-garde art during his time in Paris (1923–1936). His creative
legacy from the Parisian period belongs to both Armenian and European cultures.
In France, he developed a new plastic-pictorial form of expression— painting in
space—which leading art theorists regard as one of the greatest achievements of
the avant-garde. In 1936, Kochar signed the "Dimensionism Manifesto,"
which proclaimed the latest aesthetic principles of the time. A glance at the
list of signatories (Arp, Delaunay, Calder, Duchamp, Kandinsky, and others)
reveals not only the elite creators of the avant-garde but also Kochar’s place
and significance within that era and among those artists. In 1936, Kochar was
repatriated to the USSR, finding himself on this side of the "Iron
Curtain," bringing with him the spirit, energy, and approaches of
contemporary art.
VISITOR INFORMATION
The works of this great artist are exhibited in many museums worldwide, but only here can one gain the most comprehensive understanding of his creative journey. The exhibition features works from his "Tiflis," "Parisian," and "Yerevan" periods, including paintings, graphics, sculptures, and relief compositions. It is only here and at the Pompidou Center in Paris that one can witness the marvel of Kochar’s art known as " painting in space." The museum also showcases rare documents and valuable archival materials that testify to Kochar's connections with the great masters of the avant-garde.
