CENTRAL COVERED MARKET (CLOSED MARKET)
1952
State index: 1.6.152
Architect: Grigor Aghababyan
Constructor: H. Arakelyan
The market building is located at 3a M. Mashtots Avenue. It was built in
1952, commissioned by the Ministry of Trade of the Armenian SSR.
The market building (before renovation) is a three-tiered hall with an
emphasized central nave. The main hall, 70 m long and 32 m wide, is covered
with 19 reinforced concrete vault-bearing arches, which follow each other every
4 m. The arches have received an artistic solution with the help of
rhythmically decreasing small arches, which give lightness to the structure and
enrich the interior space. The side naves are two-storied, accessed by wide
stairs.
The main facade facing the avenue is solved with a powerful arched entrance. The main entrance is decorated with metal-stained glass, a movable door, and national ornamental motifs. Inside the market, there was a small fountain pool where there was a tradition of throwing coins. The occupied area is 2300 sq. m. The dimensions are 42 x 92 m, the building material is reinforced concrete and tuff.
In 2012-2013, it was thoroughly renovated, with the interior
transformed. Since 2014, it has been operating as the “Yerevan City” shopping
center.
