SQUARES AND PARKS
Reconstructed in 2009-2010
Located in the Ajapnyak administrative district, on the edge of the Hrazdan Gorge near the Kiev Bridge (Hrazdan Grand Bridge), the park was established in 1970 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great Armenian poet Hovhannes Tumanyan. Known to locals as “TUMO Park,” it covers an area of 7 hectares.
In 1971, a basalt sculpture of Anush and Saro, the main characters from Tumanyan's poem “Anush,” was created by sculptor Levon Tokmajyan and installed in the park in 1973. The sculpture stands 2.8 meters tall. In 1986, a bronze sculpture of Loretsi Sako, another character from Tumanyan’s works, was erected in the park by sculptor Sargis Baghdasaryan. This sculpture measures over 4 meters in length and more than 2 meters in height but was later damaged. In the early 2020s, it was restored by Ashot Baghdasaryan, the sculptor's son, and moved to Dsegh village in the Lori region, the poet’s birthplace. It now stands in the village’s central square, along with other sculptures depicting Tumanyan’s characters. The restoration was commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia.
The park underwent significant renovations between 2009 and 2010, which included the creation of soccer and basketball fields, children's playgrounds, the planting of around 1,000 trees, the construction of pedestrian and bicycle paths, and the installation of an automatic irrigation system.
Adjacent
to the park, near the former “Aragats” cinema, the first TUMO Center for
Creative Technologies in Armenia was established in 2011. This initiative, led
by the American-Armenian Simonian Educational Foundation (headed by Sam and
Sylva Simonian) and designed by renowned Lebanese architect Bernard Khoury,
provides free technology and design education to children. The park, maintained
by the TUMO Center, remains a popular and vibrant space for various community
events.
