HOLY VIRGIN CHURCH IN AVAN
The Holy Virgin Church was built on the site of an ancient temple. 2002
The Holy Virgin Church was built by Avan residents Academician Grisha Melik-Sargsyan and businessman Armen Aghajanyan in 1996-2002. Grisha Melik-Sargsyan's great-grandfather, Melik Sargis, had built another church in Artsakh in the 17th century similar to the Holy Virgin Church, and his grandson, Melik Avetis, had renovated the dome.
During
the construction of the Holy Virgin Church, a pillar foundation stone of an
ancient temple was discovered. Grisha Melik-Sargsyan had seen a model of the
church in a dream and had prepared it. Later, the church was designed and built
according to that model. The church is 11 meters high, has an area of 30 square meters and a belfry. A house for
the spiritual pastor, the residence of the chairman of the parish council and a
spiritual center were also built next to the church. A fountain, and a khachkar
were installed in the courtyard. The construction of the church was also
supported by Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, and Archbishop Navasard
Kchoyan, Vicar of the Ararat Patriarchal Diocese. The consecration ceremony of
the church was held on November 9, 2002.
