The
monument dedicated to Vahagn, the god of courage, thunder and war of ancient
Armenian pagan mythology, is located on the visible part of the Yerevan-Sevan
highway and is the northern entrance to Yerevan. It was named Dragon Slayer because, according to
tradition, he fought against dragons that embodied evil and darkness.
The
monument is erected on a low basalt pedestal.
On
the south-facing surface of the monument, Vahagn is carved, standing above
storm clouds and slaying a three-headed dragon. At the top is a sculpture of
grape leaves, the symbol of Armenia. The ancient Armenian mythological poem
"The Birth of Vahagn" by Movses Khorenatsi is engraved on the back of
the monument. It is built of polished red tuff. The height is 4 m.
