BUST OF ALBERT AZARYAN

2022

Sculptor Gerasim Shahverdyan

The Yerevan City Council made the decision to install a bust of the prominent Armenian gymnast, three-time Olympic champion, four-time world champion, two-time European champion and Asian Games champion, honorary president of the National Olympic Committee of Armenia (NOCA) and the Gymnastics Federation of Armenia, Honored Coach of the Armenian SSR Albert Azaryan (1929-2023) in 2021. On December 1, 2022, they installed his bronze bust in the courtyard of the Children's and Youth Olympic Reserve Gymnastics School named after the champion, located at 3 Moskovyan Street. The 93-year-old Albert Azaryan also participated in the opening ceremony. NOCA President Gagik Tsarukyan supported the implementation of the event.

They installed the bust on a cross-shaped pedestal. The latter symbolizes the complex of exercises on rings performed by the world-famous Armenian, which the International Gymnastics Federation certified as the "Azaryan Cross". They engraved the front of the pedestal with:

ALBERT / AZARYAN / THREE-TIME / OLYMPIC CHAMPION.

The sculptor created the bust based on a photograph when the 27-year-old athlete first received the title of Olympic champion (1956). According to the sculptor's explanation, he "depicted Azaryan as young so that generations would remember him that way".
