YEREVAN ZOO

1940

 Founded: 1940

Reconstructions: 1959, 1975

Architects: Grigor Aghababyan, Babken Hakobyan, Spartak Knteghtsyan and others

Located at 20 Myasnikyan Avenue, near the ancient fortress of Aghvesaberd and the medieval canal of the same name.

Founded in 1940 by decree of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR on an area of 3 hectares. Construction began in 1941 and was completed in 1950. During the Great Patriotic War, construction work was suspended. It was reconstructed in 1959, and the area was expanded to 22 hectares. During the second reconstruction (1975), the park's area increased to 35 hectares. The main entrance from Myasnikyan Avenue was built according to Grigor Aghababyan's design. The author of the pavilions and administrative building is architect Babken Hakobyan, and the decorative fence is by Nora Hakobyan. Architect Spartak Knteghtsyan also participated in the reconstruction work.

From the main entrance, a wide alley leads to the beginning of the zoo, where a pond and playground have been built. A little further are flower gardens with fountains, surrounded by pavilions for rest.

To the left of the main alley rises the administrative building. On the territory of the former quarry, there are cages and fenced areas for animals.

When creating the alleys, good visibility of the park's inhabitants was taken into account.

Initially, the park had about 20 different animals, acquired at the XII State Zoological Exhibition in Yerevan. As a result of reconstructions, the variety and number of animals also increased, reaching 350 in 1980. In the early 1990s, due to the complex political and economic situation in the third republic, the number of animals decreased significantly. The park was even on the verge of closure. Fortunately, this did not happen, and over time the park was improved and enriched.

As of July 2022, the 35-hectare zoo houses 126 species (707 individuals) of animals and birds living in Armenia, the Caucasus region, and different continents. Some of them are listed in the International Red Book of Nature Conservation, and some in the Red Book of Armenia.

Various scientific and educational events are held in the park, and working relationships have been established with various international organizations and zoos.
