The
monument and grave of Shushanik Kurghinyan (Popolchyan, 1876-1927), a famous
Armenian poetess of the 20th century, founder of Armenian proletarian poetry,
social revolutionary figure, defender of women's rights in Armenian reality,
are located to the left of the main entrance to Komitas Park, outside the
pantheon, in the area of the former Mler public cemetery.
When
in 1930 By the decision of the Executive Committee of the Yerevan City Council,
the Mler cemetery was closed and a park was founded on the site, and later also
a pantheon of Armenian cultural figures, Kurghinian's grave was not moved and
remained in its original place.
The
tombstone erected at the cemetery is a symbol of public recognition and memory
of the poetess. It is a unified composition of a high, two-tiered pedestal of
polished granite rising on a basalt base and a bronze bust placed on the
latter. The upper tier of the pedestal is incomparably larger than the lower
tier. The inscription on the front seat is: SHUSHANIK KURGHINYAN. The bronze
bust has a portrait resemblance to Kurghinian, made in a free and expressive
style.
In
2023, the bust was restored by sculptor Sargis Baghdasaryan's son, sculptor
Ashot Baghdasaryan.
