With its narrow, uneven, steep and radial streets, Kond is one of the oldest districts of the city in the center of Yerevan.

Kond is a historical old district of Yerevan in the eastern highlands of the city, in the Kentron administrative district. It got its name because of its high location: “kond” means an elongated or rounded hill.

During the Persian rule, the name of the district was changed and called “Tabbabash”, which is a translation of the word Kond. From the Persian period, a mosque of the late 17th century has been preserved in Kond, which, along with its attached school, ceased to function in 1828. In 1915, after the Armenian Genocide, refugee families took refuge in the dilapidated mosque.

Kond is home to the Church of St. John the Baptist, which with its parish school was the most important center of Kond at all times.

Kond itself is a historical and cultural value. In the front part of the district were the two-story houses of the nobility. Two historical canals, Mamri and Abuhayati, also passed through here. The district was also famous for its orchards, especially grapes. The vines intertwining the courtyards and streets still remind us of the Kond of old.

The area of ​​Kond is about 16 hectares. Despite its high location, the district had both irrigation and drinking water in the 18th century. The cold springs have been preserved to this day.

Kond attracts Yerevan residents and tourists with its inexplicable attraction of the old urban environment: every house symbolizes the struggle between the past and the present.

Kond will definitely appeal to those who want to feel the breath of a small but old “city” in the modern capital. The roads will take you through narrow streets resembling a labyrinth, where the houses are made of uneven bricks, with old-fashioned, colorful, wooden doors. Here, there are mainly single-story, often interconnected, earthen houses with shared courtyards descending from the hillside in a staircase-like manner.
