MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES
HayArt Center
The HayArt Center is a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to the presentation of contemporary art in Armenia.
In
1972, the first Modern Art Museum in the USSR was opened on the first
floor of a residential building designed by architect Armen Zaryan (7 Mashtots
Avenue). Due to the need to expand the scope of work, almost 10 years later,
architects Gevorg Aramyan and Jim Torosyan designed a new building for the
museum.
This
was the first attempt in Soviet architecture to design a Modern Art Museum. The
goal of architects Gevorg Aramyan and Jim Torosyan was to create a structure
that would comply with the principles of modernist architecture.
As a
result of this approach, 5 monolithic concrete cylindrical buildings were
built, which were connected to each other by passages. On one side, they were
stuck in the hill rising from Mashtots to Saryan, and on the other, they seemed
to hang in the air, resting on short columns.
The building was officially opened in 1985. Since its foundation, the building has hosted international exhibitions that have played a significant role in the development of Armenian contemporary art. Today, this building embodies the modern thinking of 20th-century architecture. It symbolizes the experiences and creative freedom of the time, while remaining a unique example of contemporary art.
The building now houses the HayArt Center, founded in 1997.
The HayArt Center is a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to the
presentation of contemporary art in Armenia. Located in Yerevan, in a building
that was originally designed as a museum of contemporary art, the HayArt Center
continues that vision by supporting artistic and curatorial innovations and
international collaborations.
