The
monument to the great Armenian writer, founder of modern Armenian literature
Khachatur Abovyan is located at the end of Abovyan Street, in the square that bears his name. The sculpture was
created in 1947, installed in 1950. It is placed on a granite four-sided pedestal rising on a
stepped ground. The total height of the monument is 9 m, the bronze statue is
3.65 m.
Khachatur
Abovyan's posture is calm, his gaze is fixed, he holds a book in his hand.
Simple and restrained plastic gives the image a grandeur and solemnity,
characterizing him as an intellectual concerned about the fate of his people.
The manner of execution is close to the 19th century classicism.
A sculptural frieze is placed on the
upper part of the pedestal, a rosette on the front facade, and on the opposite
side bears a quote from
Abovyan engraved in both Armenian and Russian:
I DIDN'T WISH FOR A LONG LIFE.
I DID NOT ASK FOR RICHES FROM THE WORLD.
BUT EVERY BREATH I BROUGHT WAS DEATH FOR
ME,
IF I DIDN'T BRING IT TO MY NATION.
