MONUMENT TO THE FALLEN YUGOSLAV PILOTS
1989
The monument is dedicated to the memory
of the crew of the Yugoslav plane that died on December 7, 1988, on the way to
deliver humanitarian aid to the Armenian people affected by the catastrophic
earthquake in Spitak. On the night of December 12, 1988, the plane crashed not
far from the landing site, southwest of the village of Tsaghkunk, Armavir
region, near the Kasakh bridge, killing all seven members of the plane's crew.
The grateful Armenian people erected monuments in memory of that tragedy in
1989, both at the crash site and in Yerevan. The Tsaghkunk monument was built
using the remains of the crashed plane (architect: Zhirayr Petrosyan). The
fallen pilots were also buried here.
The monument, built on Khaghagh Don
Street in Yerevan, is placed on a platform made of polished gray basalt and red
granite. A bronze sculpture resembling a tree is placed on the sacred pedestal,
above which seven birds with outstretched wings symbolize the souls of the
victims soar. The names and surnames of the Yugoslav pilots and the year of
their death, 12.12.88, are inscribed on the memorial wall. The height of the
monument is 5.80 m.
