RESIDENTIAL HOUSE AND HOUSE-MUSEUM OF ALEXANDER SPENDIARYAN
1925-1927
State Index՝ 1․6․46
Architecture՝ Nikoghayos Buniatyan
It is located at the intersection of the Nalbandyan and Tumanyan streets, at 21 Nalbandyan street. It was built according to first chief architect of Yerevan (1924-1938) Nikoghayos Buniatyan’s project. According to the architect’s idea, there should have been constructed four identical buildings at all corners of the intersection, but only two were built on the opposite sides of the Tumanyan Street (Nalbandyan St. 21 and 23). The central part of the residential house is a three-story, the lateral sides are two-story. It has a semi-basement floor. Concavity, staircases at the entrances of the central part, open balconies of the lateral parts, original white exterior color (now pink) give expressiveness to the building.
During
the last years of his life, Alexander Spendiaryan (1871-1928) lived on the
second floor of the three-story part of the building.
On
November 25, 1967, a home-museum was opened in the building (State index:
1.6.46.2). The exhibition introduces Spendiaryan’s life and work, his
connections with Armenian literary and artistic figures, the world-famous
Armenian painter Hovhannes Aivazovsky, Russian writer Maxim Gorky, songwriters
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Alexander Glazunov, Anatoly Lyadov. His violin,
conductor’s stick, manuscripts, photographs, documents about the formation of
the Armenian Symphony Orchestra, many personal items are exhibited.
The permanent exhibition also includes the only “Spendiarophone” musical instrument in the world, which was created by Spendiaryan in 1905 for the symphonic composition “Three Palms.” Concerts, lectures, exhibitions, various educational and cultural events are regularly organized in the house-museum. A table dedicated to Alexandr Spendiaryan is installed on the wall of the building (architect: Oleg Shokarev). A granite monument is placed in front of the building (1979, architect: Stepan Kyurkchyan, sculptor: Davit Babayan (from Yerevan), state index: 1.6.46.1).
