YEREVAN RAILWAY STATION
1956
State index:
1.5.7
Architect: Edmond Tigranyan
It is located at Sasuntsi Davit
Square.
The design of the Yerevan
railway station began in 1947 in Tbilisi at the “Caucastransproject” design
institute and was completed at the “Armstateproject” institute in Yerevan.
Construction took place between 1952 and 1955.
The building was designed in
accordance with the plastic and structural principles characteristic of
post-war Armenian architecture. The main façade faces Tigran Mets Avenue. It is
emphasized by three arched entrances, each two stories high, and long arched
colonnades, while the central volume is completed with a rotunda and a
hexagonal spire, installed in 1969. The railway tracks run parallel to the
building.
The core of the spatial plan
consists of the ground-floor hall and the distribution hall, from which
passengers proceed to the waiting hall or platforms. The side sections contain
waiting rooms and service areas. The second floor houses service and administrative
rooms. Classical and national motifs are used on the façades.
The building measures 120 × 30
meters, with a total height of 50 meters. It is constructed from finely dressed
Ani tuff. Marble and granite were used in the interior. During operation, some
reconstructions were carried out, and additional structures were added to the
side volumes.
It is the largest railway
station in Armenia. It plays an important role in shaping the urban development
of the southern part of the city. It is also one of the city’s most important
transport hubs.
