1956
State. index: 1.5.7
Аrchitect: Edmond Tigranyan
It
is located in the southern part of the city, in the administrative district of
Erebuni, at 1st street of Sasuntsi Davit Square.
The
project launched in 1947 in Tbilisi, at the “Caucastransproject” project
institute and was concluded at the “Armstateproject” institute in Yerevan (the
author was the Armenia Soviet Socialist Republic’s (ASSR) honourable builder,
architect Edmond Tigranyan, the son of the famous composer Armen Tigranyan).
The
construction was in process during 1952-1955. It is considered one of the most
important transportation hubs of Yerevan- city’s central station. It is
designed by the plastic and constructive rules that had been prevailing in
Armenian architecture style in post-war period. The main façade is directed at the Square and Tigran Mets
Avenue.
Here
stand out three two-storey entrances and long, arched columns, and the central
part of the surface ends with a rotunda and hexagonal buttress, installed in
1969.
The
railways run parallel to the building. The core of
the plan structure is the ground floor hall and the distribution hall, through
which the passengers pass either to the waiting room or to the platform.
On the edge areas are situated waiting and
service rooms. On the second floor function the service and administrative
rooms. Classical and national motives were used in decoration of the façades.
It
has dimensions of 120 x 30 m, total height stands 50 meters. It is constructed by
smooth tuff from Ani. For inner constructions were used marble and granite.
During exploitation, some reconstructions were
made, structures were added to the marginal dimensions.
Thus, it represents by itself Armenia’s major railway station. It has a vital role on the development of shaping the southern part of the city.
