Sculptor: Hripsime Simonyan
The
author of the “Armenuhi” (Armenian woman) statue is Hripsime Simonyan, one of
the founders of ceramic art in Armenia.
When
creating the work, the artist avoided superficial decorations and an overly
ambitious approach to material and form. In this way, she revealed the noble,
powerful and at the same time taciturn image of the Armenian woman.
The
ceramic sculpture represents a full-length figure of a standing woman: her arms
are folded on her chest, and the three-dimensional head, shoulders and chest
merge with the flat surface of the dress. This emphasizes the harmony of the
statue and the architectural structure. This impression is reinforced by her
unusually strict frontal (frontal) position. The unexpected movement of the
left edge of the dress seems to have been caused by a strong gust of wind. This
gives the whole figure a sense of movement and internal emotional tension. The
clothing of “Armenuhi” is extremely simple: only the belt is outlined, and the
lower part depicts the figures of the human-birds. The face is expressive due
to the deep-set eyes, which create a feeling of introspection.
The
sculpture was installed in Yerevan's Lovers' Park on December 9, 2009, as a
gift to the capital from Hripsime Simonyan's family.
