Architect: Phoenix Darbinyan
Sculptor: Ara Harutyunyan
The
great Armenian composer, musicologist, teacher and conductor Komitas (Soghomon
Soghomonyan, 1869-1935) is the founder of the Armenian national compositional
school. He recorded thousands of songs, saving the musical culture of the
Armenian people from oblivion and presented it to the world, proving that the
Armenians have their own and unique national music. On January 29, 2024, by a
unanimous decision of the UNESCO Executive Board, the collection of Komitas'
works was registered in the international register "Memory of the
World". The monument to Komitas is located in the center of Yerevan, on
Sayat-Nova Avenue, in the park in front of the Conservatory building named
after him. The ceremonial opening of the monument took place on January 8, 1988.
The
3-meter-high bronze statue of Komitas is placed on a round granite platform.
The sculpture depicts Komitas, a survivor of the Armenian Genocide of 1915,
grieving and worried, sitting on the trunk of an uprooted, but still clinging
to the ground, dried-up apricot tree with branches. The figure is built with a
harmonious combination of delicately crafted facial sculpture and generalized
body shapes. The composition is characterized by scale and lyricism.
