SQUARES AND PARKS
STEPAN SHAHUMYAN SQUARE
Stepan
Shahumyan Square is located in Kentron Administrative District, at the
intersection of Vazgen Sargsyan and Khorenatsi Streets.
Formerly
known as Cathedral Square, it was the site of the Russian St. Nicholas Church.
On September 20, 1931, a monument to Stepan Shahumyan—a Bolshevik
revolutionary, political figure, publicist, and leader of the Baku Commune—was
erected in the square (sculptor: Sergey Merkurov, architect: Ivan Zholtovsky).
