Located
in Victory Park. The remains of the Unknown Soldier were brought from the city
of Mozdok, which was liberated during the Great Patriotic War by the 89th
Armenian Tamanyan Division, and were reburied in front of the "Mother
Armenia" monument in 1970. An eternal flame and a tombstone were
installed, designed by architect Rafael Israelyan.
In
1985, as part of the program of events dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the
Great Victory, the Victory Park memorial complex, including the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier with a five-pointed star of eternal fire, was reconstructed and
renovated (architects: Ashot Aleksanyan, Anahit Navasardyan). The grand opening
took place on the 40th anniversary of the Great Victory, on May 9.
The
cemetery is a wide, rectangular platform covered with large basalt slabs, in
the center of which is a massive tombstone made of reddish Lalvar
quartzite-sandstone. On the latter, in bronze letters, in Armenian and Russian,
is inscribed: "YOUR NAME IS UNKNOWN, YOUR FEAT IS IMMORTAL." It is framed by a four-tiered border of
smooth gray granite, which in turn is bordered by a black granite mourning
belt. It borders on the Alley of Heroes on one side, and on the other, the
staircase leading to the Victory Monument.
