Sculptor: Ferdinand Arakelyan
The museum is located in the southwestern section of the 1915 Armenian Genocide Monument platform. It is a major scientific and cultural institution formed within the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia. The founding director is Doctor of Historical Sciences Lavrenti Barseghyan. The museum-institute's mission is to collect, preserve, process, publish, and display documents, photographs, literature, and other materials related to the Armenian Genocide, which the ruling circles of Turkey prepared and carried out in historical Armenia from 1915 to 1923.
The museum's architectural composition stands out for its unique volumetric-spatial solution. The northern wall of the museum blends with the silhouette of the hill. The surface of the building's roof is leveled with the platform of the Great Calamity Monument. The two-story, circular building measures 64 x 35.5 m, with descending stairs leading to the entrance. Above the entrance, engraved on a basalt slab, are the numbers: 1915, ՌՋԺԵ (Armenian numerals). The first floor houses the library, document archive, conference hall, and the research center for Armenian Genocide studies. Exhibition halls occupy the second floor.
The floor is
tiled. Opposite the entrance leading to the inner courtyard stands a large,
horizontally positioned khachkar (cross-stone) in the shape of a tombstone,
measuring 8 × 3 m with an arched top (sculptor: Ferdinand Arakelyan). The upper
left half of the khachkar bears the engraving:
“MORNING OF LIGHT, LET THE SUN OF JUSTICE SHINE ITS LIGHT
UPON ME”.
The museum's
permanent exhibition presents documentary materials and relics that reveal the
details of the Armenian Genocide that took place at the beginning of the 20th
century and reflect the international community's attitude towards it.
