REPUBLIC SQUARE STATION
1981
State index: 1.6.96.6
Architects: Jim
Torosyan, Mkrtich Minasyan
Constructors: O. Hakobyan, A. Hovhannisyan
It
is located in the northern part of the intersection of Nalbandyan Street and
Main Avenue, next to Republic Square. Designed in 1975. Construction began in
1981. Until 1991, it was called the "Lenin Square" station.
A harmonious connection has been created between the station and the Republic
Square complex. In the structure, starting from the sidewalk level, low-rise,
stepped horizontal platforms have been separated. On three sides, staircases
smoothly lead from the sidewalk to a semi-open, 52 x 46 m courtyard, in the
center of which is a circular, luxuriously designed fountain. The latter is
formed by a system of 40 basins with fan-shaped openings, the diameter of which
gradually decreases towards the center and resembles a rosette. The cover of
the semi-open courtyard opens onto the fountain in a unique form of eight
"petals". The side sections of the "leaflets" are decorated
with floral ornaments and images of birds.
The reinforced concrete pavement is supported by conical reinforced concrete columns arranged along the perimeter of the opening, the side walls and a stone wall with an arch. The walls, stairs and floor of the semi-open courtyard are lined with dark red Byurakan tuff. Three escalators lead down from the lobby to the platform. The main waiting room is distinguished from the right- and left-side platforms by three-arched columns. It is faced with white marble. The floor is paved with red granite. The opening opposite the entrance to the hall, from which the second exit is intended, is closed with mirrored shields.
In 1983, he was awarded the State Prize of the Armenian SSR.
