LEONID AZGALDYAN MEMORIAL

The
monument to Leonid Azgaldyan (1942-1992), a talented scientist, radiophysicist,
skilled military figure, participant in the Artsakh Liberation War, is located
on Mashtots Avenue, near a residential building.
From
the very first day of the Artsakh movement, Azgaldyan participated in the
Armenian national liberation struggle. He organized and led the self-defense
battles of a number of regions of the Armenian SSR, in particular, the Vardenis
region. In 1991, he created the "Liberation Army" military
organization. On June 21, 1992, he was killed by a conspiratorial shot near the
village of Tonashen, Martakert region. In 2019 On August 31, 2002, on the
occasion of the 28th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of
Artsakh, Leonid Azgaldyan was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Artsakh
and the "Golden Eagle" medal.
The
monument was installed on December 11, 2002 near the building where the hero of
Artsakh lived. The upper part of the stone (height 2.7 m) made of two pieces of
gray basalt, with a polished surface, a rhombus-shaped image of the hero is
carved with realistic expression, emphasizing the bright individuality of the
character. A palm branch is depicted on the northwestern side of the monument,
and the inscription on the southwestern side is: "LEONID AZGALDYAN. HERO-COMMANDER OF INDEPENDENCE AND
LIBERATION ARMIES." The monument has the significance of perpetuating
the memory of Leonid Azgaldyan, a great Armenian, national devotee, citizen,
and scientist.
