State index: 1.3.14
Sculptor: Vahe Harutyunyan
Architects: Armen Aghalyan, Grigor Grigoryan
The monument to
Vahagn, the god of courage, thunder, and war of ancient Armenian pagan
mythology, is located in the courtyard of building No. 12 on Vagharshyan
Street. According to tradition, he fought a duel with dragons, who personified
darkness, from which he received the nickname Dragon Slayer.
The copper sculpture
is erected on a pedestal made of stone fragments and is placed in the middle of
a small basalt pool with a square (8.0 × 8.0 m) plan. The latter, in turn,
connects to another, lower level, rectangular basalt pool. Fountains are placed
in the middle of the lower pool. Vahagn is depicted fighting a dragon.
