FRANCE SQUARE

2006

It is located at the intersection of Sayat-Nova, Marshal Baghramyan, and Mesrop Mashtots Avenues, in front of the Alexander Spendiaryan Opera and Ballet National Academic Theatre building.

As an urban node, it was created during the Soviet years and was known as the “Opera-adjacent Square”.

In 2006, during the “Days of France in Armenia” event, it was named “France Square”, the opening of which was attended by the President of France, Jacques Chirac, and the world-renowned Armenian singer Charles Aznavour.

In 2011, during his visit to Armenia on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the country's independence, the then President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, donated to Armenia a statue by the 19th-century French naturalist painter Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884), sculpted by the world-renowned French sculptor Auguste Rodin in 1887. They installed the statue in the central part of France Square. The official opening took place on October 7, 2011.
