SAINT VERGIN MARY CHURCH IN MALATIYA
The Church of Saint Vergin Mary in Malatia is dedicated to the memory of the heroes who fell in the Artsakh Liberation War and the martyred Armenians of Malatia.
1991
In
1927, many Armenians emigrated to Soviet Armenia from the city of Malatia in Lesser
Armenia, establishing the New Malatia district of Yerevan. In the 1960s, a
memorial park dedicated to the victims of the 1915 Armenian Genocide was built
in the district, and years later, the Church of Saint Virgin Mary was built
next to it, which is similar to the main church of the historical Melitene
(Malatia). During the construction of the church, soil brought from the Malatia
province of Lesser Armenia was mixed with the wall mortar.
The
construction of the church began in 1991 during the reign of Vazgen I,
Catholicos of All Armenians. It is dedicated to the memory of the heroes who
fell in the Artsakh Liberation War and the martyred Armenians of Malatia. The
church has been operating since 1998.
