State index: 1.6.129
Architect: Stepan Kyurkchyan
Sculptor: Yervand Kochar
The
monument to Vardan Mamikonyan is located in the Circular Park, at the
intersection of Khanjyan and Vardanants streets. It is dedicated to the leader
of the 5th century Armenian liberation movement against Sasanid Persia, the
commander of the Armenian troops in the Battle of Avarayr in 451, sparapet (supreme commander) Vardan
Mamikonyan. The official opening ceremony of the statue took place on December
20, 1975.
In
the square paved with tuff, on a polished pedestal built of pink tuff of Artik,
is a wrought copper statue of the general, seemingly suspended in midair. The
plastic solution is expressive, with monumental stylization, full of movement
and tension. The complex, dynamic composition of the stone pedestal is in
harmony with the general spirit of the work. The image of Vardan Mamikonyan
demonstrates courage and an unyielding will to sacrifice himself for the sake
of the homeland.
The
monument bears compositional and stylistic elements characteristic of the
Italian Renaissance and 20th century sculpture. The total height is 17 m.
