MONUMENT TO HOVHANNES AIVAZOVSKY

2003

 Architect: Stepan Kurkchyan

Sculptor: Yuri Petrosyan

Sponsor:  President of the “Prometheus” CJSC Senik Gevorgyan

The monument to the world-renowned Armenian marine artist Hovhannes Aivazovsky (also known as Ayvazyan) is located at the beginning of Moskovyan Street, near the Yerevan Chamber Music Hall, in Circular Park. The competition for the monument was announced in 1987, and sculptor Yuri Petrosyan was selected as the winner. However, due to the Artsakh Liberation War and a lack of funding, the project was not implemented at that time. The monument was finally installed in 2003, thanks to the sponsorship of Senik Gevorgyan, President of “Prometheus” CJSC.

The unveiling ceremony took place on May 1, 2003. Gevorgyan also contributed financially to the installation of the monument to the prominent Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian in 1999, located near the Great Hall of ArmPhilharmony.

The bronze statue depicts Aivazovsky standing amidst the swells of the sea, bareheaded, wearing a long coat, with a brush in his right hand and a palette in his left. It is mounted on a two-stepped, smooth granite pedestal, with inscriptions in both Armenian and Russian on the front of the lower step. The statue stands 3.5 meters tall and weighs approximately 2 tons.
