THE SECOND PROFITABLE HOUSE OF MIKHAIL VON DER NONNE
1898
State index: 1.6.203.7.1
Project author: Yerevan provincial engineer Mikhail Von der Nonne
The house, built of Yerevan black tuff, is located at 30 (1) Hanrapetutyan Street, at the corner of its intersection with Tigran Mets Avenue. It adjoins Von der Nonne’s first house.
The house project was approved in
January 1898. It was built in the same year. In 1899, the building was handed
over to the Poltava Regiment for religious purposes. The provincial printing
house operated in the annex.
In 1916, Von
der Nonne’s houses were sold to Alexander and Artavazd Azizyants. In 1923, they
were nationalized, after which this house was given to the military department
and the headquarters of the Armenian division (until 1937). Hayk Bjshkyan
worked in the building in 1922-1923.
The building
has an L-shaped plan (16.3 x 11.4 m), a basement, and is two-storied. In the
main building, the interior space is divided by a corridor system. The rooms
face northwest (street) and southeast (courtyard). The corridor communicates
with Von der Nonne’s neighboring first house. The cantilever balcony of the
second floor is oriented towards the street. The northwest facade is divided
into 3 parts by slightly pronounced vertical articulations. The compositional
solution is symmetrical, with projections enhanced by pediments above the
crowning cornice. The symmetry is emphasized by a suspended balcony with an
openwork metal grating. All openings (rectangular on the first floor, arched
and semicircular on the second floor) are processed with roughly hewn stone.
There are niches under the windows of the second floor, and on the first floor
- four-sided prismatic stones. The composition is completed with a broken
cornice. The ceiling is flat, with wooden beams, and there are stone vaults in
the basements. The roof is sloped and made of tin.
