The complex of buildings of the
Presidency and research institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of the
Republic of Armenia is located at 24 Marshal Baghramyan Avenue.
Construction of the National
Academy of Sciences began in 1948 and was completed in 1958. In the 1970s, due
to the expansion of the network of institutions within the Academy, two
multi-storey buildings were constructed in the vacant areas at the rear of the
site, housing the Institutes of Arts, History, Oriental Studies, as well as the
library.
At the center of the complex is
the presidency building. Parallel to it, two identical side buildings of the
Institutes of Mathematics, Mechanics, and Geology were constructed (architect
Makabe Manuelian also participated in the design works).
In the lobby of the presidency building
are the murals “Mesrop Mashtots” and “Movses Khorenatsi” (1958, artist Van
Khachatur), while in the main conference hall there are plaster bas-reliefs of
prominent representatives of science (1958, sculptor Ara Sargsyan).
The intermediate area between
the buildings is designed as a park with fountains.
