CITY PANTHEON - 2

1980s

State index: 1.5.6.2

The City Pantheon of Yerevan consists of several sections separated by passages. It is located in the Central Cemetery of the Erebuni administrative district. Here are buried state, military, and public figures who have rendered special services to the state and the people, as well as prominent figures in science, culture, and sports who have made significant contributions to their fields. In 2016, the expedition of the “Scientific Research Centre of Historical and Cultural Heritage” SNCO registered 614 graves in City Pantheon-1, 78 graves in City Pantheon-2, and 99 graves in City Pantheon-3. In recent years, these numbers have changed somewhat.

City Pantheon-2 occupies the northeastern part of the Central Cemetery. It came into existence in the 1980s. The cemetery layout features parallel rows of graves along the asphalt road, running north to south. Most tombstones consist of simple, flat slabs bearing names, surnames, and titles. Many graves also include vertically placed memorial stones with images of the deceased. Some burial sites feature monumental tombstones and individual sculptures. Low borders surround the burial plots. As time passed, families interred relatives of famous individuals next to them. The cemetery also includes a significant number of anonymous graves.

Notable figures resting in City Pantheon-2 include People's Artists of the USSR Metaksia Simonyan and Babken Nersisyan; composers Alexander Ajemian, Grigor Hakhinyan, and Aram Satunts; architect Baghdasar Arzumanyan; academicians Eduard Aghayan, Suren Yeremyan, and Ruben Zaryan; opera singer Nar Hovhannisyan (son of writer Nar-Dos); film director Henrik Malyan; Hero of the Soviet Union Sergey Sarkhoshev; sculptor Khoren Ter-Harutyun (Ter-Harutyunyan); painter Gabriel Gyurjian; Ruben Drambyan, founder-director of the National Gallery of Armenia; Armenian pop singers Georgi Minasyan and Bella Darbinyan; and various Soviet Armenian party and state officials.
