RUSSIA SQUARE

Urban development ensemble: Architect Levon Vardanyan

Opening: October 21, 2008

The square is located in the Kentron administrative district, next to the Alexander Miasnikyan Square, in front of the Yerevan City Hall.

Previously, the site of the square was Isakov Street, with high curb sidewalks and various buildings, including the former Afrikyan cotton pressing plant (19th-20th centuries, later a grocery store, demolished in the early 2000s during the construction of the Moscow House and adjacent buildings), a residential house (19th-20th centuries, demolished in the early 2000s), the Ararat trust complex, and others.

After the construction of the Yerevan City Hall building (2004, architects Jeem Torosyan, Romic Martirosyan, structural engineer Henzel Hakobyan, State Prize of the Republic of Armenia in 2007), the urban development ensemble of the square was established, the author of which is architect Levon Vardanyan. The main principle was that the urban structure adjacent to the square should be the Yerevan City Hall building. Subsequently, the Moscow House (2005, architect Levon Vardanyan, opened on 01.04.2007), the Gladzor University, and the Yerevan Plaza business center were constructed in front of the City Hall building.

The solemn opening and naming of the square took place on October 21, 2008. The opening was performed by the third President of the Republic of Armenia, Serzh Sargsyan, and the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Medvedev.
