The
Botanical Garden is located in the Avan administrative district at 1st Acharyan
Street. It is one of the largest park complexes in Yerevan, covering an area of
80 hectares between Kanaker and Nork Heights. Established in 1935 by renowned
scientists Harutyun Maghakyan, A. A. Hakhverdov, and N. V. Mirzoeva, the
garden's urban plan was designed by architect Georgi Murza between 1937 and
1938. A major reconstruction was carried out from 1945 to 1950, based on a
project by architect Hrayr Isabekyan.
The
main entrance to the park faces Kanaker and is connected by a wide boulevard to
the entrance on Myasnikyan Avenue, also designed by Hrayr Isabekyan. In the
central part of the garden, there is a small rosarium. Two administrative
buildings are situated south of the intersection of the main axes. The park's
alleys and boulevards were designed to ensure good visibility throughout the
space.
The
garden features a diverse collection of plant species, including wild,
medicinal, fruit-bearing, and many other types native to Armenia. It houses
around 200 species of wild relatives of cultivated plants, about 70 rare and
endangered species, and a range of tropical and subtropical plants. Since 2008,
thanks to the support of the Volkswagen Foundation, the Paleobotanical Museum
has been operating, showcasing a wide variety of fossil plants from Armenia.
The botanical garden serves as a scientific and educational institution and has
established connections with approximately 40 similar institutions worldwide.
