MONUMENTS
SCULPTURE “KARABAKH WOMAN”
1985
Sculptor: Davit Yerevantsi (Davit Babayan)
The
monument titled “Karabakh Woman” is situated near the Armenian Academic Opera
and Ballet Theater named after A. Spendiaryan, in the park adjacent to the
intersection of Sayat-Nova Avenue and Teryan Street.
Created
by an Armenian sculptor who has lived in Paris since 1974, the sculpture is
based on Arev Baghdasaryan, a celebrated Soviet actress, singer, and dancer
born in Shushi. The monument was installed on November 11, 1988, a few years
after its creation. Its installation was delayed due to restrictions imposed by
Soviet authorities, who initially prohibited its placement in Yerevan following
the start of the Karabakh movement.
The
sculpture, made of bronze and standing 3 meters tall, is set on a low,
rectangular platform inscribed with: “IN MEMORY OF NATIONAL ARTIST AREV
BAGHDASARYAN.”
